| Early Music of the Russian Orthodox Church ---
TROY186 (CD)
The Chamber Choir of Sacred Music, Tallinn, Estonia Choral music has a very special place in the spiritual life of the Russian Orthodox Church, to the extent that church music is almost exclusively vocal music. The music originates from the early Byzantine systems, and this recording consists of sacred chants of the 16th - 18th centuries, sung during divine services of the Orthodox Church - liturgy, vigils, akaphist, etc.

This prize-winning Choir was formed by Valery Petrov,
whose primary concern was to recreate the religious reverence and piety
which moved the creators of the original ancient Russian chants - people
who spent their lives in ascetic fasting and prayer, and for whom the music
was an essential aid to dissolving personal concerns and losing themselves
in the richness, wonder and unity of divine service.
The recording was made in Tallinn, produced by Valery Petrov, and represents a superb example of authentic religious chant sung by a devout choir. Most of the pieces are performed by this choir only, and they have earned wide popularity and recognition the the Baltic states. Serene and beautiful. |
